What is IFS and who can be certified

IFS is a food safety protocol leader in the sector, and internationally that has evolved to develop a group of standards applicable to different sectors of the food chain.

It originated in 2003, when the first version created by a working group of distributors from France, Germany and Italy was published. Since then and up to the present, it has evolved to become an international standard of recognized international prestige, to ensure that certified companies respect the specifications of their customers and meet the most stringent quality and food safety requirements.

What can be certified?

IFS has developed a series of Standards applicable to different areas of the food chain to ensure it completely, as well as for consumer products.

IFS-Food (Food):

It establishes the requirements for the manufacture of processed foods and also for food packaging companies manufactured by other companies and bulk products.

The IFS-Food Standard is organized in the following chapters:

  • Management's responsibility
  • Quality Management System and Food Safety
  • Resource management
  • Planning and Production Process
  • Measurement, Analysis and Improvements
  • Food Defense

In addition, the IFS Global Markets - Food Program is available for those small companies that, before obtaining the certificate, need a defined adaptation period during which to implement the IFS requirements. It is a tool covered by GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative) for these companies to guarantee food safety until they obtain their certificate. There are two levels, basic and intermediate compliance.

IFS Cash & Carry (Wholesalers):

Establishes the IFS Food criteria applied to audits of wholesale cash & carry and wholesale wholesalers.

IFS-Logistics (Storage and Distribution):

Establishes the requirements for companies engaged in logistics activities for food and non-food products, such as transportation, storage, distribution, loading and unloading, etc.

IFS-Broker (Agents and Brokers)

It establishes the requirements for those companies dedicated to the purchase and sale of products, but that are not responsible for their manufacture or packaging, in order to guarantee food safety between manufacturers and distribution companies.

IFS-HPC (Household Products and Personal Hygiene):

Establishes the requirements for manufacturing companies of:

  • Cosmetics and personal hygiene products directly in contact with the skin
  • Cosmetics and personal hygiene products directly in contact with the skin
  • Personal hygiene products in contact with the skin, except for cosmetics. This category includes razors, towels, hairbrushes, diapers, wigs, feminine hygiene products, costume jewelery, false nails, etc.
